Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling political party.
The defection took place on Monday, 26 January 2026, at the Coronation Hall of the Kano Government House in Kano, a major commercial city in northern Nigeria.
Mr Yusuf was received into the party by key APC leaders, including Abdullahi Ganduje, a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a past governor of Kano State; Nigeria’s Deputy President of the Senate; Senator Barau Jibrin, who represents Kano South in Nigeria’s Senate; and Yusuf Ata, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development. Other party leaders were also present.
Speaking at the event, the governor said his return to the APC was based on the need to work more closely with the Federal Government led by Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Mr Yusuf was elected governor in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a Nigerian opposition party. He has now exited that party to return to the APC, and several members of the Kano State House of Assembly and Nigeria’s House of Representatives also moved with him.
More details are expected as the story develops.
