Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, arrived in Kwara State in north-central Nigeria on Saturday, 7 February 2026, to visit Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area following a violent attack that officials said left 75 people dead.
A statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president, directed the vice president to go to the community to see the situation for himself and express the Federal Government’s condolences to families in mourning.
Shettima was welcomed on arrival by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other senior state officials.
Before the visit, the governor said the victims were local Muslims who were killed because they refused to submit to extremists who were preaching a doctrine the community did not accept. Some early reports had suggested the number of dead could be more than 100.
The killings were reported to have happened on Tuesday night, 3 February 2026, after militants allegedly tried to force members of the community to accept their teachings, but were rejected.
Nkwocha said the vice president also carried Tinubu’s message that the Federal Government would not stop until those responsible are found and made to face justice.
Tinubu had earlier condemned the attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara State, calling the violence “cowardly and beastly,” and saying security operations had already started to track down the perpetrators.
He also confirmed that an Army battalion was deployed under Operation Savannah Shield to strengthen security, protect communities, and stop further attacks.
The president urged stronger cooperation between federal and state authorities to support victims with relief and ensure those behind the killings are held accountable.
