In a recent address, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized an increase in salaries and allowances for the nation’s armed forces personnel. This came to light during an evening gathering where top officials and military leaders met to break their fast amid the ongoing Ramadan period.
The event, held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, brought together key figures including the vice president, members of the federal executive council, the national security advisor, the chief of staff to the president, the minister of defence, service chiefs, members of the armed forces, paramilitary agencies, and other senior government officials.
Speaking first, a military leader expressed deep thanks to the president for the various approvals related to better pay and benefits. He highlighted how these changes would improve operational effectiveness and were well received by the troops. The approvals also cover equipment purchases and better housing for service members.
The president, in his response, thanked everyone for attending the interfaith breaking of fast. He noted the importance of this time for reflection, self-integration, and celebrating diversity in the nation. Acknowledging the military’s role, he said he had listened to the chief of army staff’s remarks.
Tinubu went on to recognize the sacrifices of the armed forces, who often stay away from families and face dangers like banditry and terrorism. He assured that the nation is grateful and their efforts will not be in vain. He stressed that the government would do everything possible to ensure they have no regrets, including extending opportunities to their families.
Addressing broader issues, the president mentioned challenges with accommodations and other needs, but emphasized collective effort to move forward. He referenced an old saying about needing two hands to clap, symbolizing teamwork.
On the economy, Tinubu admitted a rough start but stated that stability has been achieved. He said sacrifices by the military and citizens have paid off, and Nigeria has always prevailed in tough times by coming together.
He expressed sympathy for those affected by recent incidents and called for remembering love, concern, commitment, and freedom. The president appreciated people facing terrorism and banditry challenges, affirming that Nigeria will prevail.
This development is part of ongoing efforts to support the military in Nigeria, which has been dealing with security threats for years. The pay rise aims to enhance morale and efficiency in operations across the country.
