Tinubu Pledges to Build Abuja Into Capital Reflecting Nigeria’s Growth, Commissions Arterial Road N5

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) into a modern capital city that reflects Nigeria’s growing population, economic aspirations, and national identity.

The President made the pledge on Wednesday during the commissioning of the completed Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), which links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in the Dape District of Abuja. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu described infrastructure development as a key indicator of national progress and effective governance.

He noted that improved transport connectivity in Abuja would help reduce logistics costs, attract investment, and create employment opportunities, adding that the Federal Government would continue investing in strategic projects that enhance economic activity and public confidence.

“Infrastructure is the measure by which every civilised nation announces its seriousness. No capital can carry the weight of national ambition if its arteries are blocked by neglect, excuses and abandoned promises,” the President said.

Tinubu stressed that his administration remains committed to building a capital city capable of matching the ambitions of the federation and serving as a model for planned urban development.

“We will never rest until we have made the Federal Capital Territory not only a functional seat of government, but a capital worthy of our federation, our growing population and the dreams that brought Abuja into being,” he stated.

The President highlighted his administration’s efforts to sustain ongoing infrastructure projects inherited from previous governments, noting that there had been no interruption in the construction and rehabilitation of roads across the territory.

According to him, the completion of the Dape District section of Arterial Road N5 demonstrates the government’s resolve to end the era of abandoned projects and prolonged execution timelines. The project was awarded to Julius Berger and completed within its 15-month schedule following its flag-off in October 2024.

“In the past, projects like this became permanent budget items with ten or fifteen years of excuses. Under this administration, that era is over,” he said.

Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development in Abuja and praised the contractor for delivering the project as expected.

“The Honourable Minister has shown what happens when political will meets accountability. We fund projects to see results, not to hear explanations for failure,” he added.

Describing the newly completed road as more than a transport corridor, the President said it would significantly improve mobility, ease congestion, and support economic activities across the capital city.

He noted that the corridor would provide faster connectivity among Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu, and Mbora districts while improving access to the Idu Industrial District.

Tinubu, however, emphasised that sustaining infrastructure development requires collective responsibility. He urged residents and businesses benefiting from government projects to fulfil their tax and land-related obligations to enable the FCT Administration to undertake more development initiatives.

He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to safeguard public infrastructure from vandalism.

Earlier, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike praised President Tinubu for supporting infrastructure development in Abuja, particularly in satellite towns and communities. He described the pace of development under the current administration as unprecedented and a visible demonstration of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT.

Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmud, also commended the President’s leadership and support for critical infrastructure projects, while expressing appreciation to Vice President Shettima for his commitment to developmental initiatives across the country.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the completion of the road project would significantly improve transportation and connectivity among adjoining communities in the FCT.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by federal lawmakers, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.

The phrase “who ably represented him at the commissioning ceremony” naturally highlights the Vice President’s role without sounding repetitive or overly flattering.
