The Northern Coalition for Equity and Good Leadership, a prominent group representing the interests of the Northern region of Nigeria, has frowned at Governor Akeredolu’s continuous show of contempt on the northern Nigeria with the last being his bashing of the North West on the party distribution of National Assembly positions.
The Group described the governor’s comments were hinged to undermine the unity of Nigeria, and have the potential to spark political unrest in the region, and the country at large.
Ibrahim Sanusi, the convener of the group, in a statement, expressed his disappointment and called on Akeredolu to desist from making divisive comments that could endanger the unity of the country.
Sanusi pointed out that the North had always advocated for a balanced and equitable distribution of power, as evidenced by its support for the power shift to the South during the 2023 general elections.
He further, noted that the North West region, which Akeredolu had criticised, had shown its support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu by producing the highest number of votes for him during the 2023 elections.
Sanusi also questioned Akeredolu’s motivations for attempting to incite other Northern regions against the North West, suggesting that the governor may be acting as a paid agent for other interests.
The group has alleged that Akeredolu is using his influence to support a top contender for the House of Representatives Speakership position, who is rumored to be using money to buy support for his candidacy.
The group believes that Akeredolu’s financial romance with this contender is compromising his judgment and causing him to act against the interests of the North and the country as a whole.
The Group suggest that Governor Akeredolu should desist and steer clear of the affairs of the North and the party.
The group emphasised that this is a critical period for Nigeria, and it is essential to ensure that the country remains united and cohesive.
Sanusi was quoted to have said that Akeredolu’s actions could lead to a repeat of the Bukola Saraki saga, where political intrigues caused chaos within the government.
The group also alleged that Akeredolu and his sponsors may be working as fifth columnists to undermine the success of the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmad Tinubu.
