The Federal Government has designated 20 states to initiate its Open Schooling Programme (OSP). This decision was revealed during a two-day preparatory session involving stakeholders, including SUBEB Chairmen, organized by UBEC in Abuja. The meeting, attended by the acting Executive Chairman of Yobe State SUBEB, Alhaji Isa Shettima Buni, aimed to familiarize participants with their roles and responsibilities in the programme.
The Open Schooling Programme, an initiative of the federal government, aims to boost enrolment, retention, and completion of basic education through a flexible education system. This system allows learners to study in a conducive local environment at agreed times, away from traditional schooling, using Information and Communication Technology tools.
Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, emphasized during the meeting that the programme could reach a large number of learners while overcoming spatial and temporal barriers. UBEC introduced the Open Schooling system to enhance enrolment, retention, and completion of UBE programmes for Out-of-School Children, offering a flexible education system for remote learning in an informal manner.
