The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has ordered the arrest of two officers of the Commission who were captured on CCTV as they manhandled and assaulted a female staff of Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos.
The EFCC in a press statement signed by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale said that some of its officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation in Lagos. It added that the operation yielded a sizable number of suspects who are still being profiled.
The EFCC Chairman according to the statement has also ordered detailed investigations into the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable.
“Olukoyede assures the general public that the EFCC would continue to ply its job professionally and with profound respect for the rule of law”, Dele Oyewale stated.
A viral video showed on some social media platforms showed EFCC officials raiding the Annex and Regional hotels, around 4am on June 27.
The officers reportedly fired shots, injured customers, and arrested some persons. Workers in the Hotel alleged that the EFCC officials broke into rooms, assaulted both guests and workers, while confiscating ATM cards, cash, and mobile phones.
A CCTV footage showed officials breaking into the manager’s room, where they were seen pushing and slapping a lady before taking some items from a drawer in the room.
The action of the EFCC operatives generated uproar on social media with many netizens condemning the EFCC officials for their unprofessional conduct.
