Matawalle Bello and Lessons in Loyalty

In the ever-shifting sands of Nigerian politics, loyalty is often as rare as it is invaluable. Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has not only embodied this virtue but has woven it into the fabric of his service to the nation and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. From the moment he threw his weight behind the President’s candidacy, to his unwavering defence of the administration amidst regional skepticism, Matawalle has set a high standard for allegiance, performance, and patriotism.

His journey is not merely a testament to loyalty in word but also in action—an enduring commitment to ensuring that his service benefits the nation, his Zamfara roots, and the broader ideals of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Matawalle’s appointment as Minister of State for Defense was not an accident. It was a reflection of the confidence President Tinubu had in him, a trust earned through years of steadfast support and advocacy. Even before his appointment, Matawalle was an ardent defender of Tinubu’s vision, standing firm in a region where political allegiances often waver under pressure.

Unlike others who hedged their bets, Matawalle chose conviction over convenience. His public call for unity among Tinubu’s appointees from the North was a rare and bold stance in a political landscape often riddled with self-preservation. When detractors sought to undermine the administration, he took a principled stand, urging fellow appointees to rise above regional and ethnic divides to defend the government they serve.

In his April 2024 press statement, Matawalle’s words were a clarion call to action: “We must stand up to be counted for being on the part of government or take our exit.” This was not mere rhetoric; it was a rallying cry for accountability and collective responsibility, setting him apart as one of the President’s most reliable allies.

While loyalty in politics can sometimes feel performative, Matawalle has matched his words with measurable results in his role as Minister of State for Defense. His tenure has been marked by transformative reforms and a hands-on approach to addressing Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.

One of his standout achievements has been the revitalization of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). Under his leadership, the passage of the DICON Bill in 2023 opened the doors for strategic partnerships with global defence firms, enabling advanced technology transfers and the local production of military hardware. His collaboration with NASENI and the Ministry of Steel Development has resulted in a state-of-the-art military hardware production facility, positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in defence technology.

Matawalle’s vision is clear: reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and empower Nigeria to equip its Armed Forces with locally made solutions. Speaking at DICON’s 60th anniversary, he likened the agency’s transformation to the self-reliance model exemplified by the Dangote Refinery. His emphasis on domestic production is not just about defence; it is a bold economic strategy that creates jobs and saves foreign exchange.

Matawalle’s leadership in combating banditry, particularly in the North West, has been resolute and results-driven. Following his visit to the region, the Nigerian Armed Forces executed strategic operations that led to the elimination of notorious bandit leaders like Kachalla Ibrahim Gurgun Raji and Sani Wala Burki. These operations dismantled entrenched criminal networks.

His hands-on involvement, including multiple tours of the region, underscores his commitment to eradicating insecurity.

Beyond the battlefield, Matawalle has shown a deep commitment to the welfare of Nigeria’s ex-service personnel. By digitizing the verification process for military pensions, he has eliminated the grueling physical exercises that veterans once endured. This reform ensures that entitlements are processed efficiently and with dignity, demonstrating Matawalle’s understanding of the human side of defense management.

In a political climate often defined by opportunism, Matawalle’s loyalty stands as a beacon of consistency. While some within the cabinet have a history of working against Tinubu’s interests, Matawalle has remained steadfast, defending the President even when others stayed silent. His call for appointees to “defend the President or take their exit” reflects a rare moral clarity in Nigerian politics.

His recent visit to Zamfara State was met with enthusiastic crowds, a testament to his deep connection with his constituents and their recognition of his work. Matawalle has proven that loyalty and performance can go hand in hand. And this is an example for his colleagues.

Dr. Bello Matawalle’s story is one of unwavering allegiance to his principles, his party, and his President. His achievements as Minister of State for Defense—revitalizing DICON, leading decisive operations against banditry, and improving military welfare—are tangible proof of his effectiveness.

At this moment in our political journey when loyalty is often transactional, Matawalle has shown that steadfastness and results-driven leadership can coexist. He has not only stood by President Tinubu but has also carried the APC’s flag with dignity and purpose. His colleagues would do well to learn from his example, for it is this kind of commitment that will guide Nigeria toward a more secure and prosperous future.

Matawalle is more than just a Minister; he is a lesson in loyalty and leadership. And for that, he deserves our recognition and commendation.
