In a major political development, opposition leaders have reportedly agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their collective platform for the 2027 general elections. Former Senate President David Mark is set to serve as Interim National Chairman, according to insiders.
The coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi. After months of discussions, the group has rejected other platforms, including the Social Democratic Party, due to concerns about APC loyalist influence.
Efforts to fill the National Secretary role have been unsuccessful so far, with Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Ben Obi declining the position. The coalition plans to finalize leadership roles and officially unveil the ADC platform in Abuja soon.
This alliance was formed amid growing criticism of President Tinubu’s administration, which opposition figures describe as failing to deliver on key issues. The coalition aims to present a united front by having members leave their original parties and join the ADC.
Ralph Nwosu, the current ADC chairman, praised David Mark’s discipline and leadership, expressing his willingness to step down for the coalition’s benefit. He highlighted the coalition’s focus on national unity and progress rather than political power struggles.
Despite the coalition’s momentum, the APC remains confident of victory in 2027, dismissing the coalition’s efforts as doomed.
The coming weeks will be critical as the coalition moves toward formalizing its structure and launching its campaign.
