The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced itself from Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, cautioning him against parading himself as the party’s Publicity Secretary and official spokesperson.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, the ADC leadership said Abdullahi’s continued self-identification as its spokesperson was both misleading and a violation of the party’s internal protocols.
“The ADC finds it imperative to address a matter of significant concern regarding the representation of our esteemed party. It has come to our attention that Malam Bolaji Abdullahi has been presenting himself as the Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson of the ADC,” the statement read.
The party explained that the position of Publicity Secretary carries strict eligibility requirements, which Abdullahi has not met. These include being a registered and active member of the ADC, obtaining a nomination form with endorsements from at least three party members across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and finally being elected at the National Convention.
“This assertion is not only misleading but also a violation of the established protocols that govern the appointment of individuals to such critical positions within our party,” the party stressed.
According to the ADC, these requirements are in place to promote inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, and to ensure that only legitimate representatives speak for the party.
“In light of these criteria, it is clear that Malam Bolaji Abdullahi does not meet the necessary requirements to serve as the Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson of the ADC. His continued self-identification in this capacity is not only unauthorized but also undermines the credibility of our party,” the statement continued.
The party, therefore, urged Abdullahi to immediately “cease and desist” from using the ADC’s name and title without authorization.
It also issued a stern appeal to media organisations and journalists, urging them not to attribute statements to Abdullahi as the party’s spokesperson.
“We call upon media houses and journalists to exercise due diligence in their reporting. It is crucial that they refrain from recognizing Malam Bolaji Abdullahi as an official spokesperson of the ADC. By doing so, media outlets will contribute to maintaining the accuracy, authenticity, and reliability of their reporting, which is vital for public trust and informed discourse,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy, the ADC stressed that only duly elected officials can represent and speak for the party.
“The ADC is dedicated to preserving the integrity and credibility of its representation. We believe that only authorized individuals should speak on behalf of the party, ensuring that our message is consistent and aligned with the values we uphold,” the leadership concluded.
