In a sharp reaction to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi’s recent visit to Professor Isa Ali Pantami, Bashir Ahmad, OON, has accused critics of double standards, particularly singling out activist Serah Ibrahim for what he described as inconsistency in her political attacks.
Ahmad, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), recalled that in 2021, Ibrahim had branded Pantami’s supporters as “terrorists,” even going as far as labeling Pantami’s late superior, a former Nigerian president, with the same term. He further noted that she accused him personally of backing terrorism.
However, with Obi now openly associating with Pantami — including paying him a courtesy visit — Ahmad questioned why Serah Ibrahim has not extended her earlier accusations to include the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
“By her logic,” Ahmad argued, “Obi himself now qualifies to be on her terrorist list for identifying with Pantami.”
The development has triggered fresh debates on social media, with critics slamming Obi for what they describe as political desperation and a lack of principles. Supporters of the former governor, however, maintain that political bridges are often necessary in Nigeria’s fluid political climate.
Background:
Isa Ali Pantami, a former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has long been a controversial figure over past sermons and alleged extremist sympathies.
Serah Ibrahim is known for her critical commentary against politicians and government officials.
Peter Obi remains a key opposition figure after losing the 2023 presidential race.
Implications:
The visit threatens to undermine Obi’s image as a principled politician, with opponents now framing the gesture as a betrayal of his supposed anti-establishment stance. Analysts believe this episode could be used against him in future political battles, especially if Ibrahim and other critics capitalize on Ahmad’s challenge.
