The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a state of emergency across the region.
The update was given on Tuesday by Omar Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission, during the 55th session of the mediation and security council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
Touray explained that the decision followed the recent rise in coups and attempted mutinies in several West African countries. According to him, the situation has created serious concerns for the stability of the sub-region.
He said the declaration became necessary because of “the growing number of coups and failed mutinies across our region in recent times”.
The meeting was called to address the political tension and find ways to strengthen security cooperation among member states.
