A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Port Harcourt has ordered an immediate stop to moves aimed at impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
In a ruling delivered on Friday, January 16, 2026, the court issued an interim injunction preventing the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House, and other concerned parties from sending any form of communication to the Chief Judge of the state regarding the impeachment process.
The court also restrained the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, acting on, or processing any request, resolution, or impeachment documents connected to the alleged misconduct of the governor and his deputy. The order is to last for seven days.
The ruling was given by Justice F. A. Fiberesima while considering a motion filed separately by Governor Fubara and his deputy. The judge further approved that all court documents and interim orders relating to the two suits be served on the defendants at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly residential quarters.
In addition, the court directed that the Chief Judge be served through any staff member within his chambers at the High Court complex.
Justice Fiberesima adjourned the matter to Friday, January 23, 2026, for the hearing of the substantive motion.
Despite the court order, reports from the state capital indicate that the Rivers State House of Assembly resolved on Friday to proceed with the impeachment process against the governor and his deputy.
It was also gathered that four lawmakers who had earlier stepped back from the impeachment plan and urged others to do the same later reversed their decision. They reportedly accused Governor Fubara of refusing to yield to their demands, leading them to rejoin the impeachment move.
The political situation in Rivers State remains tense as legal and legislative actions continue to unfold.
