Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 election, Peter Obi has come under fire on social media for joining the proliferation of fake news against the Federal Government.
Obi issued a statement on Thursday morning expressing concern over an alleged approval to increase the remuneration of public officers, including elected officials.
He deemed the move as unnecessary given the current economic situation of the country.
Nigerians are, however, appalled that Obi considered it appropriate to berate the Federal Government over a report that has been publicly denounced as fake news.
@Mvnaa_, on Twitter, wrote, “So you didn’t see the press release that said it’s fake news. A former Presidential Candidate spreading fake news is quite embarrassing.”
@woye1: A whole former Presidential Candidate sharing fake news. It is shocking.
@Duke_osakaa: Oga oooo whole former Presidential Candidate sharing fake news. It is shocking.
@etuprince: Sir, As a presidential candidate, the source of your information is very critical to your success. There was a recommendation by RMAFC, but it’s a process that ends with Mr. President’s approval. As of today, that approval hasn’t been given. #FakeNews
