Controversial socio-political commentator, Reno Omokri, has launched a fresh attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of deliberate disrespect towards the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja.
Omokri, in a strongly worded statement, faulted Obi’s choice of words in addressing the respected monarch during a recent engagement. According to him, Obi’s description of the Olubadan as “my dear brother” was not only condescending but a deliberate show of disregard for the throne and the cultural heritage of Ibadan people.
Drawing a sharp comparison, Omokri recalled that Obi, during his controversial “Church Take Back Your Country” campaign—widely interpreted as a ploy to inflame religious sentiments—had addressed Bishop David Oyedepo in a reverential tone, calling him “Yes Daddy.” Omokri argued that this showed Obi was capable of showing utmost respect when he desired, but chose instead to belittle a Yoruba first-class traditional ruler.
“Those who say we should overlook the error because he does not come from such a culture of respect may respectfully be missing the big picture. Peter Obi can do it when he wants to show honour and respect. That he disrespected the Olubadan was not a mistake. It was a matter of choice to show his contempt for Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja and the people of Ibadan,” Omokri stated.
The former presidential aide further invoked the biblical injunction in Romans 13:7, which admonishes giving honour to whom it is due. He accused Obi of failing this moral test, noting that culture and religion alike demand reverence for traditional authority.
Omokri, who has consistently been one of Obi’s fiercest critics, urged the people of Ibadan not to forget what he described as an insult ahead of the 2027 general elections. He ended his message with a call to Yoruba pride, declaring in Yoruba language: “Omo Ibadan, ma gbagbe eebu arakunrin yi ni odun 2027” (Children of Ibadan, do not forget this man’s insult in 2027).
The attack adds to the growing criticisms Obi has faced regarding his campaign style, alleged religious bias, and perceived lack of cultural sensitivity. Analysts note that Omokri’s comments reflect deep-seated political and cultural sentiments that may shape narratives around the former Anambra governor as Nigeria edges closer to another election cycle.
