In a recent video statement that has sparked widespread reactions online, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi distanced himself from certain supporters who have been verbally attacking other opposition figures involved in ongoing coalition discussions.
Speaking to journalists at the Symfoni Movement Headquarters, Obi emphasized unity among opposition leaders and condemned derogatory remarks directed at them.
“I dissociate myself from those calling other Leaders in the Coalition bad names. These are criminal elements who are trying to hurt the Peter Obi brand,” Obi said.
The statement comes amid reports of tensions within the opposition space, where some of Obi’s ardent supporters, known as Obidients, have reportedly criticized figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Obi’s remarks have been interpreted by critics as a stern warning to his base: disrespecting these other leaders equates to criminal behavior that damages his personal brand and the broader opposition effort.
The clip, shared widely on social media, shows Obi addressing the media with microphones clustered around him against a backdrop reading “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
One X post by user @rilwan_ola01 highlighted the quote and added a pointed commentary: “So most of these guys are criminals? No wonder…. Lmao 😂😂🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪”
The post, which includes the video, has fueled online discussions about loyalty, coalition politics, and the limits of supporter activism in Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape.
Obi’s team has not issued further clarification on the statement at the time of this report, but it underscores his push for disciplined engagement as coalition-building efforts continue.
