The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects linked to violent disruptions during a peaceful protest in Makurdi on Sunday, June 15, 2025. The protest, organized by youths to express concerns about security issues in the state, was initially peaceful but was hijacked by unruly individuals who obstructed traffic and set a truck ablaze on the outskirts of the city.
In a statement released by police spokesperson Udeme Edet, the command detailed that the violent incident occurred in Apir, where the suspects forcefully stopped a truck and set it on fire with the driver trapped inside. The driver’s identity remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
The police underscored their respect for peaceful protests but warned against violence and lawlessness. “While the right to peaceful protest is respected and protected, it is imperative that such expressions remain lawful and non-violent,” the statement read.
Ahead of the protest, police tactical teams were deployed to maintain order after receiving intelligence reports. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, personally visited the protest site with Deputy Governor Barr. John Ode to engage with the crowd and encourage peaceful conduct. Unfortunately, the crowd declined to listen, and disruptive elements attempted to attack the deputy governor.
Police officers intervened using non-lethal means such as smoke and water cannons to control the situation and evacuate the deputy governor safely. No injuries were reported during these operations.
The police condemned the acts of violence and assured the public that those responsible would face prosecution. “Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other culprits and instigators behind the violence,” the statement added.
The command also praised the peaceful protesters and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring security throughout Benue State.
