Amid mounting preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 elections, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is struggling to maintain internal unity as top contenders jostle for the coveted National Chairmanship position. With the November 15 convention fast approaching, party elders are working to avoid another wave of crisis.
In the mix are political veterans Jerry Gana, Kawu Baraje, and Ahmed Makarfi, all believed to be interested in leading the party. Acting Chairman Umar Damagum is also seeking to solidify his position. However, whether the party can present a united front against President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains uncertain.
At the core of the debate is the method of selection. While consensus is seen by some leaders as essential for party stability, figures like Osadolor argue it undermines transparency. “Consensus is dangerous,” he warned, emphasizing the importance of open contests.
Party insiders confirm that arrangements for the convention are in place, with sales of nomination forms beginning in early September.
Yet political observers, including APC’s Bala Ibrahim, suggest that the PDP’s disarray could leave Tinubu with a weaker opposition heading into 2027. “I doubt if the convention will produce a leadership that will be acceptable to all the talk shops,” Ibrahim said.
