Oseloka Obi, the only son of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election and former Anambra State governor has been caught in a web of controversy following social media reports alleging he is gay.
An old graphics surfaced online showing where Peter Obi’s son featured in a pro-gay play titled “Edward II”. Eloka Obi He was pictured on the graphics in a romantic posture with another white male wearing a crown (who played the role of King Edward II). They duo appeared to be gearing up to kiss.
In the play written by the 14th century English playwright, Christopher Marlowe, Eloka Obi played the role of Gaveston, King Edward’s lover in the play. Users of the popular social media platform X (formerly twitter) joined the fray with some expressing shock that the son of Mr. Peter Obi would be playing a gay role.
Many outrightly alleged that Oseloka Obi is a gay. Mr. Peter Obi is a proud Catholic. The Catholic Church, especially in Nigeria is strongly against same-sex relationships. The Nigerian law is also against same-sex unions and relationships and in fact criminalises them. Movies depicting same-sex scenes are sometimes censored by the movie regulatory agency in Nigeria.
A lot of those who weighed in the gay controversy rocking Mr. Oseloka Obi could not wrap their heads around the picture of the son of a man who his supporters see as deeply religious and pious, appearing to kiss another man even if it was purely a scene in a play.
