The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until September 28, 2026, a suit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar seeking to disqualify President Bola Tinubu from the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), filed the suit with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1888/2026, listing Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.
The suit is centered on allegations that Tinubu submitted a forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate to INEC. Atiku alleged in an affidavit that the certificate submitted bore the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle,” which differs from the President’s actual name. He further claimed the disputed certificate has been used by Tinubu since his 1999 Lagos State governorship contest.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Atiku’s lawyer informed the court that they had been unable to personally serve Tinubu with court processes. While Tinubu’s counsel offered to accept service on behalf of his client, Atiku’s lawyer insisted on a written undertaking confirming such authority. Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned the matter to allow Atiku to regularize service.
The court also warned parties and their lawyers against discussing the case in the media or on social media, threatening “very drastic action” if the warning was breached.
