Marking Democracy Day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, described Nigeria’s democratic system as a stabilising force in West Africa. In an official statement through his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar highlighted the country’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles, even as the region faces increasing political turmoil.
Tuggar noted that Nigeria’s adherence to regular elections, peaceful transitions, and constitutional governance has set a positive example for neighbouring countries. “Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” he declared, acknowledging the resilience of the nation’s democratic institutions despite their imperfections.
He stressed that Nigeria’s dedication to electoral integrity, civic participation, and the rule of law has ensured both internal stability and a reputation as a trustworthy democratic partner. “In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development,” the minister stated.
Tuggar’s remarks come at a time when ECOWAS is confronting renewed threats to democracy in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, all of which have experienced military coups. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring civilian rule, insisting that democracy should remain at the heart of regional conflict resolution strategies.
Citing Nigeria’s significant role in past peacekeeping missions and ECOWAS engagements, Tuggar emphasised that the nation’s political health has a profound impact on West Africa as a whole. He asserted that democratic governance is not merely a national concern but a key element of regional stability. “Democracy is not just an internal affair,” he said. “It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”
Tuggar also praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to steer Nigeria toward economic resurgence and political unity, expressing hope that ongoing reforms will secure lasting prosperity.
