The traditional institution in Nigeria has suffered a significant loss with the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who passed away on Sunday at 91 years old. His demise came shortly after the country bid farewell to former President Muhammadu Buhari, a close confidant of the monarch.
Ascending the throne in 1960, Oba Adetona’s reign was marked by unwavering dedication to his people and a steady hand in the governance of Ijebuland. His influence extended beyond traditional boundaries, impacting the broader socio-economic landscape of Ogun State.
The late Awujale’s passing has stirred emotions among his subjects and colleagues. Prince Adedoyin Alatishe’s poignant message, “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole 💔. Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu,” encapsulates the collective mourning and the void left by the monarch’s departure.
Oba Adetona’s tenure as a traditional ruler remains a benchmark for leadership, blending cultural heritage with progressive development.
