Atiku, Obi, Others’ Opposition Summit Shifted to August 31

The proposed summit of major opposition political parties and leaders, initially scheduled for August 18, 2026, has been postponed to August 31, 2026, as consultations continue on efforts to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The summit, convened by the G-100, is expected to bring together prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and other political stakeholders.

The G-100 is advocating greater cooperation among opposition parties and has called for the possibility of presenting a single presidential candidate in the 2027 election, arguing that a fragmented opposition would struggle to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by former APC chieftain Salihu Lukman, the group said the decision to reschedule the summit followed consultations with six participating opposition parties and members of the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives.

The group explained that holding the summit after the National Peace Summit scheduled for August 18 would provide political parties and stakeholders with more time to consult internally and prepare proposals for the opposition meeting.

According to the G-100, consultations with the leadership and principal stakeholders of the participating parties have so far been “frank, substantive and encouraging.”

The group acknowledged that differences exist among the opposition parties but said the discussions had revealed a willingness among stakeholders to listen to one another and explore practical areas of cooperation.

“There is a clear recognition across the different parties that this is an important moment for Nigeria’s democracy and that the opposition must begin to engage one another with greater purpose and structure,” the group said.

The additional two weeks are expected to be used to deepen consultations and refine proposals that will be presented at the August 31 summit.

The development comes as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition leaders facing the challenge of reconciling competing ambitions and building a workable political coalition.

The G-100 has maintained that the objective is not merely to bring opposition figures together but to establish a structured framework for cooperation capable of producing a credible and broadly acceptable political alternative.

The August 31 meeting is therefore expected to be closely watched as opposition parties continue discussions over a possible alliance, common political platform and the selection of a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

The G-100 said further details regarding the programme and venue of the summit would be announced in due course.
