In a solemn move, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London medical facility. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
This day off work is part of a seven-day national mourning period aimed at paying tribute to Buhari’s significant impact on Nigeria’s political landscape and national development. Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former special adviser, Garba Shehu, in a statement released on Sunday evening.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo praised Buhari’s leadership qualities, highlighting his dedication and integrity. The minister said the holiday is intended to give Nigerians time to reflect on Buhari’s service to the nation.
The statement reads, “The holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.”
Citizens have been encouraged to honor Buhari’s memory by fostering peace and national unity. The government also ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast during the mourning period starting Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government expressed heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, Katsina State residents, and the entire Nigerian populace, praying for the late leader’s peaceful rest.
