The Lagos State Government has unveiled a traffic management plan ahead of the reconstruction of a section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, a critical highway connecting Lagos to neighbouring Ogun State.
In a statement released on Sunday, March 1, 2026, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed that the reconstruction will affect the stretch between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop on the Lagos-bound carriageway.
The project will be handled by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works and will run from Saturday, March 7, 2026, until Saturday, May 30, 2026, a total of 12 weeks.
Authorities stated that the main Lagos-bound carriageway from Super Bus-Stop to Ilepo Bus-Stop will be completely shut during the construction period. However, vehicles travelling in the opposite direction towards Abeokuta will continue to have through traffic.
To manage the expected congestion, the government advised motorists travelling from Abeokuta or Sango Tollgate towards Lagos and Oshodi to use alternative routes.
“Option 1- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi will be diverted to the BRT Corridor by Super Bus-Stop and exit the BRT Corridor by Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) to continue their journeys.
“Option 2- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi can also go through Ekoro Road to Old Otta Road through Alira Street to link Abeokuta Street to connect Pleasure Bus-Stop to continue their journeys.
“Option 3- Motorists from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate going to Lagos/Oshodi can alternatively go through Abule Egba Underbridge to connect Agege to link their desired destinations
“For the construction period, motorists on the other side of the carriageway, (Abeokuta Bound) will have a through traffic,” the statement partly read.
The commissioner added that emergency tow vehicles will be positioned within the Bus Rapid Transit corridor to quickly remove broken down vehicles and limit traffic delays.
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway is one of the busiest entry routes into Lagos, serving commuters, commercial drivers and interstate travellers daily. Officials urged road users to follow traffic signs and cooperate with traffic control officers who will be deployed to manage the situation during the 12-week reconstruction.
