In the weeks following Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, President Bola Tinubu’s rewarding of the team with national honours and significant monetary prizes has prompted a divided public opinion.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained the rationale behind the decision in a public statement. He pointed out that when compared to the ₦150 million grand prize handed over by Multichoice to the Big Brother Naija reality show winner, the monetary rewards to the Super Falcons seemed reasonable. “President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit,” Onanuga emphasized.
During a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, each player and the technical team was honored with the award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Beyond that, President Tinubu declared a $100,000 cash reward for every player and $50,000 for the coaching staff. The players will also receive three-bedroom apartments in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate, Federal Capital Territory.
The rewards have generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. Many question the use of foreign currency for rewards amid the country’s economic challenges and argue that soldiers and police personnel have been historically underappreciated financially.
One social media user expressed concern, “Why is he gifting them in dollars? The richest countries in the world won’t ever make such gifting to athletes who collect salaries.” Another commented on the symbolic implications, “The Nigerian government should, as a matter of urgency, do away with the line of promoting another nation’s currency.”
Contrarily, supporters praised the President for honoring the women’s team, arguing that the Falcons’ achievements deserve high recognition irrespective of country’s current struggles. Some rebutted direct comparisons between a government reward and private sector prizes as irrelevant and unfair.
The discourse reveals a fragile balance in rewarding sports professionals appropriately while managing the nation’s financial realities and prioritizing basic public services.
