The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The move was announced during plenary when the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, presented a formal notice before lawmakers. He explained that the action was taken in compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, which sets out the procedure for removing a governor or deputy governor from office.
According to Dala, the allegations stem from Gwarzo’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024, as well as his activities since assuming office as deputy governor.
He told the House that the accusations include diversion of funds allocated to local government councils and abuse of office. Kano State oversees 44 local government councils, which manage grassroots governance and public administration at the community level.
Dala alleged that while supervising the Ministry of Local Government, the deputy governor was involved in diverting funds intended for local government operations. He described the alleged actions as serious violations that fall within the definition of impeachable offences under the constitution.
He further clarified that gross misconduct includes grave breaches of constitutional provisions or other serious wrongdoing by a public office holder.
The Majority Leader informed lawmakers that the impeachment notice was signed by 38 members of the Assembly, satisfying the constitutional requirement needed to commence the process.
“Based on the foregoing allegations, we hereby resolve that His Excellency, Aminu Abdussalam, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, be impeached and removed from office in accordance with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Dala said.
Following the presentation, members indicated their backing for the notice. The Speaker acknowledged receipt of the document and is expected to transmit the allegations to the deputy governor in line with constitutional procedures.
The deputy governor had not issued a public response to the allegations as of the time this report was filed.
