ABUJA, NIGERIA: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the upcoming 2027 election.
The President accepted the nomination on Sunday, May 24, 2026, during a speech delivered at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, according to reports monitored by Podium Reporters.
Reflecting on his political journey, President Tinubu recalled his initial nomination four years ago at Eagle Square, where he sat alongside his predecessor, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. He noted that while he stood as an aspirant back then, he has now returned as the incumbent leader, filled with new energy to push forward with national development.
President Tinubu emphasized that his second-term bid is focused on continuity. He explained that his administration aims to maintain current reforms, secure national progress, and strengthen the foundations of a modern Nigeria. He expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of the party, governors, the National Working Committee, lawmakers, and all loyal party members for their trust.
Highlighting the structural changes made since 2022, the President stated that the country has experienced major economic and electoral shifts. He pointed to new tax laws and fiscal policies that have significantly improved revenue collection across the federation.
On education, the President announced that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund has successfully removed financial barriers for young students. The government has disbursed over N282 billion from the fund, benefiting more than 1.5 million young Nigerians.
The speech also detailed major milestones in the power sector. Through the Presidential Metering Initiative, the administration has distributed 2.5 million electricity meters to help end estimated billing. Furthermore, a N4 trillion bond programme has been set up to clear long-standing debts owed to electricity generation and gas companies. President Tinubu revealed that electricity generation recently hit a peak of 6000MW, marking a 50 percent increase from what his administration inherited.
Addressing the economy, the President defended the removal of fuel subsidies and the adjustment of foreign exchange rates. He noted that despite global inflation caused by geopolitical crises in the Middle East and the war in Iran, Nigeria’s economy is showing positive signs, with rising foreign reserves and a strengthening naira.
Infrastructure development remains a key priority for the administration. The President highlighted ongoing work on durable concrete roads, including the coastal superhighway and the Sokoto-Badagry route, which are built to last for over a century. Upgrades are also underway at various airports and seaports, while fresh billions of dollars in investments have been attracted to revive the oil and gas industry.
President Tinubu also touched on social welfare, noting that government programs are actively supporting vulnerable homes, small businesses, women, and the youth. He invoked the spirit of the national anthem, urging all citizens to stand together in unity despite differences in tribe or tongue.
While celebrating these achievements, the President acknowledged the daily struggles of citizens. He stated that his administration governs in reality and is taking direct action to solve the rising cost of living.
On national security, the President promised that he takes his duty to protect lives and property very seriously. The government has increased funding for intelligence, modern surveillance gear, and military equipment. In a major policy shift, he called on the National Assembly to amend the Constitution immediately to allow for the creation of State Police.
“We will not rest until we restore peace and stability to every corner of our country,” President Tinubu declared.
Looking ahead to the election scheduled for January 2027, the President urged voters not to fall into complacency or allow politicians without a clear plan to take the nation backward. He extended a hand of partnership to political opponents, stating that democracy thrives on a variety of ideas and a shared love for the country.
Closing his address, the President thanked the APC members for making him their torchbearer once again. He pledged to lead an inclusive government that listens and acts in the best interest of all Nigerians.
