The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Fennecs of Algeria in the international friendly at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran.
The defeat means Nigeria have now lost four consecutive matches against Algeria, including a 2018 World Cup qualifier which was forfeited in Algeria’s favour after former manager Gernot Rohr fielded an ineligible player.
The Nigerian team had earlier played a test game against the home-based Algerian national team on Friday which ended with a 2-2 scoreline. But they met a stiffer opposition with the top Algerian stars on duty for the former African champions.
The Eagles had taken the lead in the ninth minute through Lorient striker Terem Moffi but the three-time African champions could not get going from that point with the Algeria gaining ascendancy
Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty shortly before the halftime break after Frank Onyeka’s foul.
The desert foxes continued to dominate in the second half and their dominance paid off when Youcef Atal struck a long range effort that caught a badly positioned goalkeeper Francis Uzoho off guard just past the our mark.
Godwin Saviour, Taiwo Awoniyi and Cyriel Dessers were brought in by Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro to boost the attack in search of an equaliser but it was little too late.
