The Nigerian legal fraternity is in mourning following the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, who passed away at the age of 89 early Friday morning. The confirmation came from Dr. Kayode Ajulo, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.
Justice Uwais served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006, a period during which he was widely respected for his judicial wisdom and integrity. After retiring from the Supreme Court, he was appointed to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. This committee, which included notable figures like Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, was tasked with recommending reforms to improve Nigeria’s electoral system.
His leadership in this committee underscored his dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring fair electoral practices. The reforms proposed under his chairmanship have had a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.
Funeral plans for Justice Uwais have not yet been announced. The nation awaits further details while preparing to pay homage to one of its most distinguished jurists.
