In a significant display of civic activism, protesters gathered in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Democracy Day, June 12, 2025, to demand an end to poor governance in Nigeria. The protest, which attracted numerous citizens, was marked by a strong police presence to ensure the safety of all participants.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, was on the ground, engaging directly with the crowd. According to eyewitnesses, Jimoh spoke to the protesters, emphasizing the police’s role in safeguarding their constitutional rights while maintaining public order.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer had earlier posted a video on X, showing armed officers deployed at the Ikeja Underbridge protest site. He wrote, “Democracy Day celebrants and protesters at Ikeja Underbridge… Adequate security on the ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remain our priority. #LagosPoliceNG.”
Prior to the protest, the Lagos Police Command had negotiated with 15 Civil Society Organisations to designate Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota as the official protest venue in Lagos. This agreement was intended to channel the demonstrations into a controlled environment, minimizing disruptions while respecting citizens’ rights.
The protest highlights the ongoing demand for good governance and accountability as Nigerians commemorate a day that symbolizes democratic resilience and hope.
