The Nigerian Armed Forces have detained 16 officers following allegations of indiscipline and disregard for service protocols. Authorities revealed that the arrests were part of a standard military review exercise intended to uphold professionalism within the ranks.
A statement by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, said investigations established that the officers’ complaints were largely tied to their inability to pass multiple promotion examinations, which led to perceived career stagnation.
Gusau noted, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations. Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.
“Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.”
He added that investigations would be concluded and those found guilty would face disciplinary measures accordingly. “Upon completion of investigation indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” Gusau added.
He further assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would not condone any act capable of tarnishing its image. “The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” he declared.
The Nigerian military has, over the years, consistently maintained a strict code of discipline and accountability among its personnel.
