President Bola Tinubu has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible governorship election in Osun State on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The President called on INEC to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, describing the Osun election as an opportunity for the commission to demonstrate its preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
Fifteen candidates are contesting the election, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Hon. Najeem Salaam.
PBAT also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security chiefs involved in the election to provide maximum security at polling units and protect voters and electoral officials from intimidation or disruption.
He urged voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibility peacefully, assuring them that adequate security measures had been put in place before, during and after the election.
The President stressed that the outcome of the election must reflect the will of the people of Osun State.
“INEC must use this last off-cycle election as a test case to demonstrate to Nigerians their full preparedness for the 2027 polls,” he said.
He further called on all stakeholders to ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.
