Daniel Ezeigwe, the media aide to Anambra State’s First Lady, Nonye Soludo, has moved to correct the record regarding the spiritual ties between the Obi and Soludo families, stating categorically that former Governor Peter Obi does not serve as a godfather to any of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s children.
The clarification became necessary after a video circulated widely in which Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, claimed that he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children. Speaking at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu on Friday, Obi had described his relationship with Soludo as close despite their political differences, insisting there was no personal disagreement between them. “People might not know, my wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close,” Obi had said.
However, in a statement issued on Saturday, Ezeigwe set the record straight. He explained that the actual relationship is that Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter, while Margaret Obi, the former governor’s wife, is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters. “Mr Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr Nonye Soludo,” the statement read, adding that neither Obi nor Soludo had served as a godparent to the other’s children.
Ezeigwe suggested that Obi might have simply misspoken during his remarks, but stressed that given the widespread circulation of the video and the enquiries it generated, it was important to set the record straight. He added that the relationship between the two families remains cordial and there is no need to misrepresent it in any manner.
