President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 25th anniversary of his assumption of public office as Head of Government and Chief Minister of Gujarat.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, President Tinubu, on behalf of the Nigerian government and people, described the milestone as a historic achievement and commended Modi’s longstanding service to the people of India.
Modi first assumed office as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and served in the position for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister of India in 2014.
PBAT described 25 years of continuous leadership as a rare achievement in a democracy, noting that Modi’s longevity in public service reflects the confidence placed in him by the Indian people.
He commended the Indian Prime Minister’s leadership in areas including infrastructure, digital public services, financial inclusion and innovation, saying his administration had contributed to India’s emergence as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.
PBAT also highlighted the strong strategic partnership between Nigeria and India, recalling Prime Minister Modi’s historic State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
According to the President, the visit provided fresh momentum for bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology.
President Tinubu further noted that Nigeria and India, as fellow democracies and leading voices of the Global South, share a commitment to promoting a fairer, more inclusive and representative international order.
The President expressed confidence that Nigeria-India relations would continue to deepen under Modi’s leadership and wished him good health, strength and continued success in serving the people of India.
