President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria, approving the development of the Ibom Deep Seaport and the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international standards in a major boost to Akwa Ibom State’s economic and infrastructure development.
The landmark approvals, which are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime and aviation sectors, attract local and foreign investments, create employment opportunities and expand the nation’s economic base, were announced by the President on Friday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
President Tinubu gave the approvals in response to requests presented by Governor Umo Eno, describing the proposed seaport as an important economic asset capable of transforming commercial activities and positioning Akwa Ibom as a major investment destination.
“It is approved; Ibom Deep Seaport will bring associated economic value and economic development here,” the President declared.
He also confirmed approval for the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport, stressing the importance of modern aviation infrastructure in driving economic growth and strengthening connectivity.
“Your leader made a request for international airport status. I approved it,” he said.
The approvals represent a significant step towards unlocking the economic potential of the South-South region and strengthening Nigeria’s position as a destination for international trade, logistics and investment.
President Tinubu also commended Governor Eno for his commitment to infrastructure development, noting that continuity in governance and purposeful leadership remain essential to sustainable development.
Describing his visit to Akwa Ibom as a homecoming, the President recalled his professional experience in the state during his years with Mobil, including assignments involving the company’s operations in Eket.
“Coming to Akwa Ibom is like homecoming for me,” he said.
Beyond infrastructure, the President outlined his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young Nigerians through education, vocational training, skills development, employment and agricultural investment.
“I promise you a better future. I promise you development. I promise you education. I promise you skill development. I promise you jobs,” he assured the people.
He particularly identified oil palm cultivation as an area with enormous economic potential for Akwa Ibom, urging the state to harness its agricultural resources to support industrialisation, wealth creation and employment.
“There is no reason why Akwa Ibom cannot use the economic palm trees and the palm plantations here,” he said.
On the 2027 general elections, President Tinubu encouraged eligible Nigerians, particularly young people, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in the democratic process, describing the cards as essential instruments for exercising their constitutional rights.
“The weapon you have is the PVC. If you have not collected it, please go ahead and collect your Permanent Voter Cards,” he urged.
The President’s visit also featured the inauguration of several infrastructure projects delivered by the Umo Eno administration, reflecting the growing partnership between the Federal Government and Akwa Ibom State in advancing development.
Among the projects inaugurated were the new International Terminal Building, International Airport Hospital and Ibom Aviation Village at Victor Attah International Airport.
Other projects included the Airport–Okopedi Road, Ring Road 3, the AKWA-GIS Office Complex, the Command and Control Centre and the ARISE Palm Resort.
The approvals for the Ibom Deep Seaport and international airport upgrade further underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting strategic infrastructure projects across the federation, strengthening regional economies and creating new opportunities for Nigerians.
President Tinubu’s engagements in Akwa Ibom formed part of his two-state visit to Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, combining infrastructure development activities with political engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
