Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has been appointed as Pro Chancellor of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto by the President. The President also appointed Chief Wole Olanipekun, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association as Pro Chancellor of the University of Lagos.
A former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress and Founder of Olivia University in Burundi, Sir Paul Chukwuma was also appointed to head the board of the Federal Polytechnic in Kano. According to a publication by the Federal Ministry of Education, 109 others were equally appointed into the Governing Councils of Federal Universities, Boards of Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education.
Other notable personalities among the appointees include Dr. Isa Yuguda, a former Governor of Bauchi State, who was appointed as Pro Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN); Prof. Peter Okebukola, former NUC Chairman who was appointed Pro Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt; former Ebonyi State governor, Chief Martin Elechi who was appointed Pro Chancellor of the Federal University in Dutse, Jigawa State; Senator Udoma Udo Udoma who was appointed Pro Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano; also, a former President of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Isa Aremu was appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Nasarawa State.
The constitution of the Board of federal tertiary institutions is coming few days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called on the federal government to constitute these boards and meet some other of their demands or expect a nationwide strike action from the union.
