…Kano House of Assembly dissolve four Emirates, dethtone Bayero
Former CBN Governor and dethroned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II is set to be reinstated as the Emir of Kano according to credible reports emanating from Kano.
This follows the repeal of the Kano State Emirate Council Law, which had paved the way for the balkanisation of the Emirate in 2019 and subsequent dethronement of Emir Sanusi II in 2020 by the former governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The Kano State House of Assembly passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill, 2024 to repeal the controversial 2019 law and dissolved the four new Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye created in 2019. With the expected assent of the Governor, Abba Yusuf, this will effectively dethrone the current Emirs in these four new Emirates.
The Assembly also passed a resolution dethroning the current Emir of Kano Emirate, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and others following a return to the old Kano Emirate that covers the entire Kano State. This leaves the door wide open for the return of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
The 2019 fragmentation of the Kano Emirate was widely perceived as a political move by the then incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje to whittle the influence and powers of Emir Sanusi II, who was a vocal critic of his administration. The APC failed to retain Kano State in the 2023 governorship election as Abba Yusuf of the NNPP defeated the APC candidate and former deputy governor, Yusuf Gawuna.
