Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, June 6, 2025, in a move that underscores the evolving political landscape in Nigeria’s South-South region. The announcement was made at the Government House in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
Governor Eno disclosed that his decision followed “three months of wide consultation” with influential stakeholders across the state. He thanked the PDP for its support during his administration but emphasized the necessity of a “progressive move” to secure the state’s interests.
In his address, Eno praised President Bola Tinubu, stating, “We’re joining the APC today in the state interest and because of our critical admiration and respect for President Tinubu and to provide the needed support for Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.” He emphasized that the defection was a strategic decision taken from a “position of strength and alive,” aimed at aligning Akwa Ibom with the federal government to maximize benefits.
The event drew notable APC governors including Hope Uzodimma (Imo State), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Bassey Otu (Cross River), highlighting the significance of the political realignment.
Governor Eno assured citizens that his dedication to their welfare will continue unabated regardless of party affiliation, stating, “After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC.”
This high-profile defection is poised to reshape political alliances in Akwa Ibom and could influence the broader political dynamics in Nigeria ahead of future elections.
