Former Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke has urged the Federal Government to accelerate the distribution of houses to the remaining members of Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad. Amuneke, who has already received his house, called for the authorities to honor their commitment to his teammates.
“You mean the 1994 houses? I have received mine long ago,” Amuneke said. “They should hand over to the others now. Let them do it.”
The government has been working to fulfill a promise made more than 30 years ago to the squad, who secured Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia.
Efan Ekoku, another member of the squad, was recently allocated a house in Abuja. The allocation letter was presented to his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, by Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of Public Building and Housing Development, representing the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Temitope highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to honoring the team’s patriotic achievements.
Nwagbogun expressed her appreciation, saying, “I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle. It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through. This gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”
The housing allocations are based on a pledge made to the 1994 squad after their historic AFCON win. The implementation was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, nearly three decades after the original promise.
Members of the 1994 Super Eagles are receiving homes in various states, including Abuja. The team, which included stars like Amuneke and Ekoku, achieved legendary status by defeating Zambia 2-1 in the final.
