Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has formally resigned from the opposition party. This development, confirmed in a letter dated July 14, 2025, signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as the country approaches the 2027 general election.
The resignation notice was sent to the chairman of the PDP’s Jada 1 ward in Adamawa State, underscoring Atiku’s personal connection to his local political base. According to the letter, shared on X by Atiku’s Special Assistant on Media, he expressed a deep appreciation for the opportunities provided by PDP over the years.
His letter states: “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
Atiku revealed that his departure was prompted by the formation of a new political coalition, the Alliance Democratic Congress, and differences with PDP’s direction. He voiced concerns over the party’s “current trajectory” which he believes strays from its original founding principles. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” the letter concluded.
This event was reported by Podium Reporters, marking a critical moment ahead of the upcoming electoral contests. Atiku’s move could reshape opposition alliances, reflecting wider tensions within Nigeria’s political parties.
Further details are expected as the political environment reacts to Atiku’s exit.
