The Nigeria Immigration Service has released an advisory urging Nigerian travelers to the United States to use their visas responsibly and in accordance with the declared travel purpose. This announcement follows concerns from the U.S. Government about visa misuse predominantly by Nigerian nationals.
Addressing the public via a statement from Abuja, the Service’s spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi highlighted, “Concerns have been raised by the United States Government regarding misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians.” He stressed the critical need for visa holders to adhere fully to their visa conditions.
The advisory reminds travelers that U.S. immigration authorities perform rigorous security checks not only at the point of entry but throughout the stay. Violations such as overstaying or unauthorized activities could lead to immediate visa cancellation, deportation, and even permanent travel bans.
Particular attention was drawn to Nigerian students in the U.S., with the NIS cautioning that only those engaged actively in their academic programs should retain valid visas. Unauthorized absenteeism or withdrawal from studies may result in visa revocation.
Additionally, NIS pointed out that U.S. consular officers are vigilant in denying tourist visas to Nigerians suspected of traveling with intentions to secure citizenship for newborns on American soil.
Akinlabi declared, “The Nigeria Immigration Service will continue its collaboration with the U.S. Mission to ensure Nigeria does not face expanded visa restrictions.” Nigerian citizens were encouraged to observe visa rules strictly to protect their opportunities for legitimate travel abroad.
