The Anambra State Police Command has paraded vigilante members allegedly responsible for the brutal assault of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in the state.
The disturbing incident, which was captured in a viral video circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), showed the corps member being physically assaulted by the personnel. The video sparked widespread outrage, prompting immediate calls for justice from Nigerians.
In response, the police swung into action and arrested the vigilante operatives involved in the act. They were paraded before the public on Wednesday as part of efforts to assure citizens that justice would be served.
Speaking during the parade, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, described the assault as “unacceptable and unprofessional,” stressing that no individual or security operative has the right to brutalize an innocent citizen.
He added that the case has been officially taken up, and the suspects would face prosecution after thorough investigation. According to him, the Command remains committed to ensuring that such acts of brutality are not tolerated in the state.
Meanwhile, the NYSC member, whose identity has not been disclosed for security reasons, is reported to be receiving medical attention and support.
The arrest and parade of the vigilante members have been welcomed by human rights groups and residents, who insist that accountability must be enforced to deter future abuses by non-state security outfits.
The development also reignites debate on the activities of vigilante groups across Nigeria, many of whom have been accused of overstepping their bounds while assisting law enforcement agencies in community security operations.
