The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, following his nomination by Governor Douye Diri.
The confirmation comes after the death of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025. Ewhrudjakpo reportedly collapsed while on official duty and was later pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. The state government had described his passing as a moment of “deep regret and profound shock.”
Akpe had served as Chief of Staff at the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa, the capital of the oil-producing state in southern Nigeria. In that capacity, he coordinated government activities and advised the governor on administrative and policy matters.
He is also an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a major Pentecostal denomination headquartered in Nigeria with branches across the world.
Born in Bayelsa State, Akpe is from Sagbama Local Government Area. He studied Education at the Rivers State College of Education before obtaining a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Educational Management and Planning from Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He began his career as a lecturer at Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State, where he taught and conducted research in education policy and management.
Akpe later moved into public administration and politics. He served two terms in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and rose to the rank of Director in the state civil service. He also worked as a legislative aide and later as Special Adviser on Political Matters.
His confirmation restores the full leadership structure of Bayelsa State’s executive arm following months of official mourning. As deputy governor, he will assist the governor in governance, policy implementation, and representation duties.
