Adeleke’s Camp Screams ‘Political Persecution!’ as The Imole Campaign Council, the re-election organisation of Osun has raised alarm over the alleged illegal detention of more than 60 leaders and members of the Accord Party by the police. Governor Adeleke is seeking re-election on the Accord Party platform in the upcoming 15 August off-cycle governorship election.
The campaign council described the arrests as unlawful and called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained party members. In a statement on Saturday, the council’s Media and Publicity Sub-Committee chairman, Bamidele Sallam, urged the Inspector-General of Police to intervene. Among those held is an Accord candidate for the House of Representatives for Ijesa South, identified only as Hon. Alaba. The council’s demand follows a similar petition to the National Human Rights Commission barely five days earlier, as political tensions and violent clashes continue to escalate across Osun State ahead of the election.
