In a dramatic move to harness the country’s booming youth demographic, the Federal Government has launched a High-Level Inter-Ministerial Platform on Family Planning, Health, Human Capital and National Development a new coordination hub aimed at turning population pressure into productive power.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, delivered a stark caution at the inauguration, declaring that Nigeria’s estimated 230 million citizens represent a double-edged sword. Without massive investments in health, education, skills training, and productivity, he warned, the nation’s demographic dividend could quickly curdle into a crippling crisis.
However, Pate stressed that the outcome is not predetermined strategic, sustained funding across sectors could flip the script and transform the population into Nigeria’s greatest economic asset. To achieve this, he issued an urgent call for unprecedented synergy among federal ministries, state governments, and development partners, insisting that fragmented efforts would no longer suffice in the face of such high stakes.
