The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. West Africa Time (WAT).
The extension is aimed at giving stakeholders additional time to prepare thorough and well-considered contributions to the proposed law, which is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for policing in Nigeria.
According to the Working Group, the extension is part of efforts to ensure that the development of the National Policing Bill benefits from broad consultation and the informed perspectives of Nigerians and relevant stakeholders.
Legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public have been encouraged to use the additional period to submit their memoranda and position papers.
Key Issues Under Consideration
The Working Group said stakeholders’ contributions are particularly important given the wide-ranging issues that the proposed legislation is expected to address. These include:
– Sustainable funding for policing;
– Command and control structures;
– Recruitment and training standards;
– Operational jurisdiction;
– Inter-agency coordination;
– Accountability mechanisms; and
– Safeguards against political interference and abuse.
The proposed framework is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s policing architecture while promoting professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Working Group also emphasised the need for a policing framework that is effective, sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across the federation.
Submission Deadline
All memoranda and position papers must be submitted exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, on or before 5:00 p.m. WAT on Friday, August 21, 2026.
At the conclusion of its assignment, the Presidential Working Group is expected to present a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for onward legislative processing.
The Working Group, chaired by Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, CFR, expressed appreciation to stakeholders who have already made submissions and urged others wishing to participate to take advantage of the extended deadline.
