The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The endorsement was announced at the grand finale of the CBCN’s 2026 Synod and the International Communion of Charismatic Archbishops, Bishops and Apostles in Abuja.
CBCN President-General, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, said the decision was based on President Tinubu’s performance in office and his ability to unite the country. “We support him now, we support him today, we support him tomorrow, and we support him for as long as he is willing to be our President,” Kawas said, adding that “this house has endorsed him for the 2027 presidency”.
Archbishop Kawas, who claimed the body has over 950 consecrated bishops, explained that the endorsement was also influenced by Tinubu’s handling of the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket. He recalled initial apprehension among Christians, but noted that the President’s appointments and projects across the country proved their fears wrong.
The event, held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, was attended by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and Minister for Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. Akume urged religious leaders to champion peace-building, asking them to discourage young people from extremism, political thuggery and hate speech. Idris stressed that preserving national unity requires responsible leadership from all sectors, including religious leaders, as the 2027 elections approach.
