There are reports of heavy shooting among cultists around Zik Avenue in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
A source, according to Daily Post, said that the shooting was by rival cult groups, who clashed in the early hours of Saturday.
According to the source, residents of the area scampered for safety during the shooting.
The state police command confirmed the shooting, stating that patrol has been intensified within the area and the entire Awka.
The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said, “Following the sound of gun shots by Zik Avenue, Awka, police patrol has been intensified in Awka.
“Preliminary information reveals that the cause of the shooting is as a result of cult-related incident/clash.
“The situation is closely monitored and further development shall be communicated.”
Meanwhile, Ikenga enjoined the good people of Anambra to remain security conscious and continue to provide the police with useful information that will assist in effectively tracking down criminal elements in society.
He said: “They (residents) are encouraged to report suspicious person(s)or movement(s)to the nearest Police Station or through the Command Emergency numbers 112 or call 07039194332 for prompt response.
