In a dramatic turn of events, the member representing Agege 1 constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa was re-elected on Monday following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda who stepped down as the Speaker of the House.
Obasa was earlier removed as Speaker on 13th January 2025 by some of his colleagues while he was out of the country and elected the then Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.
His removal triggered a political crisis in the state. Obasa later returned to the country and insisted he remains the speaker.
The power tussle took a turn for the worse as Obasa stormed the House of Assembly complex and presided over a sitting in the assembly chambers with only four lawmakers present.
The crisis led to major horse trading and negotiations behind the scenes which led to insinuations that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda was set to resign to pave way for the return of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker.
On Monday, the warring factions apparently reached a compromise as the principal officers of the Assembly began tendering their resignations including the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
After the gale of resignations, new nominations for principal officers was carried out with Mojisola Meranda returning as Deputy Speaker. Mudashiru Obasa was finally nominated as speaker and returned unanimously.
Obasa subsequently took the oath of office as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly seven weeks after his removal. Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was first elected into the House in 2007. He has been in the chamber since then. He emerged as a speaker in June 2015 before his short-lived removal in January 2025.
